ANAMBRA SOLIDARITY MOVEMENT TARGETS 2017

Awka—AHEAD of the 2017 Anambra State governorship election, a group made up of politicians and non- politicians have formed the Anambra Solidarity Movement, ASM, to identify the right candidate and campaign for his or her election during the polls.

The association, which has a notable politician in the state, Chief Austin Ndigwe as its national coordinator and Hon. Larence Onyedibe as its Administrative Secretary, is to be launched in all the 21 local government areas and all the 326 wards at a later date.

Ndigwe said during the inauguration of the state executive committee of the movement at Oba in Idemili North Local Government Area, yesterday, that the movement would target about 120,000 members across the state whose duty would be to canvass for votes for the approved candidate, insisting that ASM did not have the interest of any political party or candidate in mind for now.

He said that the founders of the movement were worried that those elected as governor often forgot their campaign promises once they moved into the Government House, only to remember the electorate during another election. Ndigwe said: “Our promise is that whoever that will be the next governor of Anambra State must visit all the wards to see what the people are going through. “The reason we want to start early is to give all those interested in vying for governorship the opportunity to realize that they should not under-rate the grassroots people as the era of dumping voters after election was over.

“We will no longer tolerate a situation whereby people will work for somebody to emerge as governor only for that person to forget those who put him into office. “It is the grassroots people that make any political party and a candidate popular. We will no longer accept a situation where the governor only comes back to give people sachet water and pittance.”
